PHOTOSYNTHESIS

LIGHT REACTIONS

Pigments: Cyanobacteria contain Chlorophyll to absorb light energy.
The thylakoid machinery give off an electron transport is used for photosynthesis in the light (during the day) to produce ATP and NADPH.

DARK REACTION

The enzyme RubisaCO fixes CO2 and convert CO2 into sugar (glucose and other carbohydrates) providing essential energy and carbon skeletons for their cellular processes.

Advantages of photosynthesis

-Photosynthesis helps to release oxygen into the atmosphere.
-Cyanobacteria have the ability to purify contaminated water.
-Through their photosynthesis process, cyanobacteria produce various chemicals such as lactic acid and simple sugars, which find applications in the production of biofertilizers and animal feed.

ROLE IN ECOSYSTEM

OXYGEN PRODUCTION

-Produce Oxygen for aquatic organims.
-Form food web for aquatic ecosystems.
-Improve the quality of water by removing excess in the water.
-Form associations with plants and fungi.

NITROGEN FIXATION

-Convery atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3) to help with plant growth
-Enhancing soil fertility with vital nutrients
-Improve the quality of ecosystems.

ATMOSPHERE

-Producing Oxygen as the product of photosynthesis
-Increasing the amount of Oxygen by 20-30% on the planet

The graph shows that cyanobacteria involved in 20% of the Oxygen production on the entire world
